Can I become a data scientist by learning on my own from Coursera, and will I have a job for that?

  • 0

This is like asking, “Can I walk from New York to Los Angeles?”

Technically, yes, but no one would recommend that.

I know a guy who did something like this. He’s self-taught, and he eventually got a job. He has a PhD (in the humanities), he’s obviously very intelligent, and even if his degree isn’t in a related field, people take him seriously. He did volunteer work in data science for a couple of years before he was able to get his first paid job.

You’re looking at the longest road to what you want, if it’s even possible. It may not be, but there are certainly more efficient paths. You may not be able to go down those paths, or you may not have the means to pursue them. You might be able to by taking some risk, taking loans for an education, but if you believe in yourself, then the risk may be worthwhile.

I wish you good luck.
